UW-Whitewater, ranked fifth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, defeated two ranked opponents Saturday to win the championship of the Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. UW-W beat eighteenth ranked The College of New Jersey 25-14 in a semifinal, then defeated number eight Ithaca College 25-17 in the championship match.
In the only matchup of ranked wrestlers in the win over TCNJ, UW-W's Pat Nagel (Carpentersville, IL/Dundee-Crown), ranked sixth, was edged by tenth-ranked Justin Bonitatis of TCNJ 4-3 at 165 pounds. The rest of UW-W's nationally ranked wrestlers won their matches, including Austin Bautista (Des Plaines, IL/Maine East) (#1) at 141 and Karl Voeck (Madison/Memorial) (#3) at 197.
Ithaca presented two nationally ranked individuals on their roster, with #8 Willie Horwath at 157 and #8 Blaine Woszczak at 149 pounds both winning their matches. Bautista, Pat Nagel (Carpentersville, IL/Dundee-Crown) (#5) and Karl Voeck (Madison/Memorial) (#3) defended their national rankings for the Warhawks.
Three Warhawks went undefeated over the two days of the tournament. Max Oldenberg, now 14-1, went 5-0 at 125; Bautista is 20-1 after adding five wins, and Sean Pietrzyk (Salina, KS/Salina South) is 15-4 with the additional five wins. Pietrzyk also continued his run of winning by fall, with two more pins Saturday to up his season total to thriteen.
UW-W also went undefeated at 285 pounds, with Jon Schmidt (Menomonee Falls/Hartford) and Sean Evans (Richmond, IL/Richmond Burton) picking up five wins, with Schmidt going 2-0 and Evans 3-0. Schmidt is 12-1 and Evans 17-3 in the heavyweight class.
