The UW-Whitewater women's volleyball team, ranked eleventh in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III poll, defeated Luther 3-1 in the last round of play at the Whitewater Invitational today, September 27. The line scores were 25-23, 18-25, 25-16 and 25-16. The Warhawks, 13-5 overall, won their invitational with a 4-0 mark.
The first game was a tight game all the way, with back and forth leads and scoring. Luther pulled ahead 21-19 late in the game, but Kelly Sorenson served 3 to put UWW back into the game. Sorenson also had four kills in that game.
In game two the Warhawks fell behind early when the Norse took a 3-0 lead. Luther had an eight point lead three different times during the game.
Games three and four looked much better. In game three, Sorenson served eight in a row to pull ahead 9-0, and the Warhawks kept a good lead throughout the rest of the game. Caitlin Hogan (New London/New London) had two services aces in this game. In the final game of the match, the 'Hawks took an early 6-0 lead with Christina DeGroot (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) serving all 6. They had 17 team kills in this game alone, and they led by more than six throughout the whole game.
Leading in digs for Whitewater was Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) with a total of 23. Hogan had 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .370 and four of the five team aces. Christina DeGroot (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) added in 31 assist and the other ace.
The win increases Whitewater's overall record to 13-5 and Luther 13-6.
Whitewater will compete again on Wednesday, October 1, when they travel to UW-LaCrosse with a 7:00 p.m start time.
