Warhawks Open WIAC Play With Win

UW-Whitewater, ranked twelfth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III poll, opened play in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 3-1 (27-29, 25-21, 25-21, 25-18) win over UW-River Falls in the Williams Center Volleyball Arena Friday.

River Falls lead most of the first game with Whitewater finally knotting the score at 22-22. The Falcons eked out the overtime win.  The Falcons also held a lead in games two and three.

UW-Whitewater was lead by Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) who had 10 kills, Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) had 11 digs, Liz Benzschawel (Madison/Edgewood) had 4 blocks, and Christina DeGroot (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) contributed 28 assists. The Falcons were lead by Kelsey Scheele who had a game high 18 digs and 8 kills, Linnea Osterberg chipped in with 16 digs, and Gina DeRosa had 4 blocks.

UW-W hit .201 and UW-RF .148.

The Warhawks are 8-4 overall, and 1-0 in the WIAC. UW-River Falls is 6-7, and 0-1.

UW-Whitewater will host UW-Stout at noon Saturday in the Williams Center Volleyball Arena.
