UW-W Falls to Eighth Ranked Whitworth 2-1

UW-Whitewater men's soccer was defeated by Whitworth University, ranked eighth in the nation, 2-1 in the Thursday afternoon game played in Spokane, Washington.

The Warhawks started out strong in the first period with a goal at 8:33 by Luke Buchholz (Whitewater/Whitewater) and assisted by Matt Gehn (Oregon/Oregon). With the Warhawks ahead by one, a corner kick for Whitewater led to a foul, and soon after, a yellow card given to UW-W's Abdoulaye Camara (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso West Africa/). At 43:18, a red card give to Warhawk Jake Duros (Lake Geneva/Williams Bay) led to a penalty kick goal by Joey Mattina of Whitworth. The first half shoed some rough play with fourteen total fouls being called, eight against Whitewater and six against Whitworth.

The second half continued more rough play, but at 81:05 Whitworth struck again with a goal by Eddy Prugh giving Whitworth the lead 2-1. A red card was called on Whitworth's Travis Jette at 83:20. There were a total of thirty fouls called, fifteen on each team and UW-W had no offside calls to Whitworth's six. However, Whitworth seemed to have the upper hand in the second period as they had three more shots and three more corner kicks than Whitewater. UW-W was unable to come back from the 2-1 deficit in the loss to Whitworth.

Buchholz led the 'Hawks with two shots and the only Warhawk goal that was assisted by Gehn. Kyle Bast (Hartland/Arrowhead), Brett Acree (Hoosick Falls, NY/Whitefish Bay), and Gehn also added a shot each. Goalkeeper Kevin Spry (Barrington, IL/Barrington) had two saves for UW-W. mattina and Prugh led Whitworth with two shots and two goals a piece.

The loss for Whitewater brings their overall record to 2-1-1 and Whitworth remains undefeated 4-0-1.

The 'Hawks will play agagin in Spokane, Washington, Saturday, September 13 against Pacific Luther at 2:30 pm.
