Whitewater Defeats St. Benedict 3-1 at Whitewater Invitational

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's volleyball team defeated the College of St. Benedict this morning at the Whitewater Invitational 3-1.

The first game went back and forth with neither team being able to gain a substantial lead until St. Benedict forced a timeout by coach Stacy Boudreau leading 19-22. The Blazers scored the first three points out of the timeout to win 19-25.

Whitewater got out to a fast start in game two with a four point lead 9-5. A couple of runs allowed the 'Hawks to build the lead to six and force a Blazer timeout with a score of 20-14. A 4-1 run by St. Benedict brought them to within two but Whitewater held off the Blazers to win 25-19.

The third game started a lot like the second with Whitewater jumping out to a quick lead. The Warhawks kept pounding the ball to overcome the Blazers. An ace and seven kills were part of the last nine points for Whitewater leading them to the 25-19 win.

Game four started off with a couple long volleys and the score going back and forth. After a Whitewater timeout down by one, 8-9, the Warhawks put together a run of four points before St. Benedict's called a timeout. The Warhawks scored four more straight to force a second timeout by the Blazers as the 'Hawks put together a run of nine to go up 21-14. Whitewater held on for the 25-21 win in the game and the match.

Keri Klotzbucher and Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) headed the attack for Whitewater with 13 and 12 kills respectively. Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) came up strong in the backcourt with 17 digs while Klotzbuecher and Alyse Karls (Dane/Lodi) added 11 each. Melissa Zuleger (Little Chute/Little Chute) was tall at the net with three solo blocks and assisting in three others.
