Warhawks Fall to Millikin 1-3

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk volleyball team lost 1-3 to Millikin in the last match of the Whitewater Invitational Saturday, August 30.

Whitewater had to work back from a quick start by Millikin as the 'Hawks fell behind 8-5. However, Whitewater was able to tie the game up at 11, but the Big Blue jumped back out ahead 18-21. The Warhawks were able to tie it up at 22 but fell just short losing 23-25.

Game two started a lot like game one with Whitewater working out of a 8-12 deficit, but the 'Hawks rallied to the lead 18-16. Whitewater was up by two 21-19 when Millikin used a timeout. The Big Blue came out of the break in play swinging and ended up taking game two 26-24.

It was all Whitewater in game three as the 'Hawks jumped out to a 9-1 lead scoring eight consecutive points. The big run in the beginning seemed to be all the Warhawks would need as they took game three 25-18.

Game four was a battle with both teams switching points. Whitewater made a couple of runs but were unable to come from behind to win game four as they lost the game 21-25. The loss brings Whitewater's overall record to 2-2 and Millikin's to 3-1.

Keri Klotzbuecher (Clintonville/Clintonville) led the Warhawks with 17 kills and 10 digs. Two other Warhawks hit for double digits in kills, Melissa Zuleger (Little Chute/Little Chute) and Liz Bezschawel added ten a piece. Four Whitewater players including Klotzbuecher had double digit digs, Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) had 15, Alyse Karls (Dane/Lodi) had 14, and Christina DeGroot (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) had 12.

The Warhawks will travel to Bloomington, IL on September 5 for the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament taking place on September 5 through September 6.
