Warhawks Open with 3-0 Win Over Alma

The UW-Whitewater women's volleyball team opened their season with a 3-0 win over Alma College today.

The Warhawks came out strong right away jumping out to a quick 14-9 lead when the Scots called their first timeout. A second timeout was forced after Whitewater extended their lead to 22-13 but nothing could stop the 'Hawks as they cruised to a 25-14 win in game one.

Game two started with the Scots taking the first lead 6-3 but the Warhawks battled back to tie the game up at nine. A seven point run allowed Whitewater to gain a 16-10 lead and they didn't let down as they won game two 25-16.

A couple of big hits in game three forced a quick timeout by Alma but Whitewater produced a six point run right out of the break in play. The Scots battled to within one point of the Warhawks and the game went back and forth until the end. Coach Boudreau called a timeout down by one point, 18-19, but the Scots came back and got two quick points forcing Boudreau to call her second timeout with a score of 19-21. Two huge kills out of the timeout swung the momentum in favor of the Warhawks and tied the game at 21. An ace by Melissa Zuleger (Little Chute/Little Chute), a ball handling error by Alma, and two kills, one from Caitlin Hogan (New London/New London) and the other by Megan Peterson (Burlington/Burlington) produced the last four points for Whitewater as they won 25-22.

Caitlin Hogan (New London/New London) led the Warhawk hitters pounding eight kills. Natalie Starken (Muskego/Muskego) and Liz Benzschawel (Madison/Edgewood) came up big at the net adding four kills each and Benzschawel added six assisted blocks. Annie Berkley (Racine/Washington Park) led the Warhawks defensively with seven digs.

The Warhawks will continue their play in the Whitewater Invitational with a game again Central College at 7:00 pm Friday, August 29.
