Bill Johnson watches his sixth inning home run

Oshkosh Earns Weekend Split with Warhawks

What a difference a day makes.  After defeating UW-Oshkosh twice Saturday, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater  found the tables turned Sunday with the Titans winning a twinbill at Prucha Field in  Whitewater, 8-5 and 10-5.

Oshkosh never trailed in game one Sunday.  UW-O broke in front on a solo home run by junior shortstop Derek Leighton in the second inning.  The Titans pushed two more across in the third, cobbling together two hits, a sacrifice, a wild pitch, a walk and a hit batsman.  Two sacrifices played a key role in Oshkosh adding two more in the fourth.

After Oshkosh upped its lead to 6-0 with a Jason Fosler lead off homer in the fifth, Whitewater came back to score four times in the bottom half of the inning.  Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa East) and Jordan Stine (Merrill/Merrill) singled in runs, and Ben Prather (Chicago, IL/James B. Conant) brought in two with another single, cutting UW-O's lead to 6-4.

Oshkosh added one more in the sixth, but Bill Johnson led off Whitewater's half of the inning with a home run to make it 7-5.  Oshkosh ended its scoring with a run in the seventh, while Jeremy Rubens helped starter Curt Hendricks shut out the Warhawks over the final three frames.

Oshkosh got ahead fast in game two, with sophomore second baseman Kyle Kannenberg driving in three in the first inning with a bases loaded double.  Whitewater's sophomore second baseman, Ben Kuhlman, responded with a lead off homer in the first to make it 3-1 Oshkosh.  UW-W manufactured two runs with four hits and a sacrifice in the fourth, knotting the game at 3-3.

The Warhawks then took their only lead of the day when senior rightfielder Tom Corcoran (Rochester, MN/Rochester) homered in the fifth.  After a scoreless sixth, Oshkosh put the game out of reach with three in the seventh and three more in the eighth.  Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa East)'s solo home run in the seventh provided Whitewater's final tally.

Rubens came back after his relief stint in game one to pitch all nine innings of game two, even though UW-W collected fourteen hits.  Rubens is 4-1.

The games had all the earmarks of a WIAC doubleheader.  Both teams were in double figures for hits in both games, totaling fifty-one hits for the afternoon.

UW-W is 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  Oshkosh is 10-5 overall and 5-3 in league play.

Whitewater will travel to UW-Platteville Wednesday, April 9 for a doubleheader, then host UW-Stout in WIAC doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13, both beginning at 12:00 at Prucha Field.
