Game 2 Box
Whitewater used the same formula in both games: score early and give the pitchers some breathing room.
UW-W scored five times in the bottom of the first in game one. The Warhawks combined five hits, with freshman third baseman Lauren Rankins (Marengo, IL/Marengo) contributing a two run single and junior catcher Liz Yucius bringing two runs in with a double.
Stout scored an unearned run in the top of the third, Whitewater did the same in the bottom of the fourth, and again in the sixth. And the last run, Stout in the seventh, was also unearned, with freshman outfielder Kaitlin Helgaas bringing the run in with a single.
Whitewater senior righthander Jesse Harmeyer, 3-2, gave up just four hits, walking one and striking out four. Helgaas had half of those to lead the Stout offense, going 2x4. Sophomore leftfielder Lauren Cruz (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West) and Rankins were 2x3 and 2x2, respectively, for UW-W.
Second game, same thing. Junior second baseman Ashley Smith (Elgin, IL/St. Edward Catholic) tripled with one out in the first and came home on a wild pitch to give UW-W a 1-0 lead. The Warhawks added six in the second, with Yucius providing a key blow with a two run single. Cruz knocked in three more with a bases loaded double.
UW-W was up 7-0 after two, and sophomore shortstop Amanda LeBeau (Worth, IL/Richards) brought the run differential rule into play by leading off the fourth with her team-leading seventh home run of the season.
Junior righty Dianna Frisbie (Juneau/Dodgeland) shut out Stout, ending the game in five innings. Frisbie, like Harmeyer, allowed just four hits. She did not walk any batters and struck out six. Frisbie is 5-0 for the season.
UW-W is 18-6 overall and 6-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Stout is 7-18 overall and 0-8 in the league.
The Warhawks will host UW-River Falls Monday at 12:00 at Lawcon Field. The field is east of Williams Center and north of Wells Hall on the UW-W campus. There is no admission charge.
