Warhawks Sweep Blue Devils in Metrodome

After several schedule changes due to inclement weather, and a change of venue, the UW-Whitewater baseball team took two games from UW-Stout early on Saturday morning in the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  The Warhawks won 9-7 and 6-0 in the early hours of the morning in a doubleheader that began at 1:00 am.

In game one, Stout drew first blood by scoring three runs in the top of the first.  The Warhawks answered in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs of their own.  The Warhawks never trailed in the game again.

A home run by Kevin Zalnis (Woodstock, IL/Woodstock) in the bottom of the third inning solidified the Warhawks' lead.  The home run is Zalnis' fifth of the season, a mark that leads the team.

After scoring one more run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-3 lead, Stout answered with another three-run inning in the top of the sixth to close the gap.  The Blue Devils then scored one more run in the top of the eighth to tie the game at seven.

In the bottom of the eighth Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa East) doubled to drive in Ben Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) and give the Warhawks the lead for good.  One more insurance run was added in the bottom of the eighth when Donovan scored on a wild pitch.

Mike Jacobson (Oak Creek/Oak Creek) earned the win for the Warhawks in game one.  Jacobson is 3-1 this season.  UW-Stout's Matt Doornick collected the loss and is 3-3 this season.

In game two the Warhawks used strong pitching to shutout the Blue Devils.  Starting pitcher Joe Munn (Pleasanton, CA/Pleasanton) combined with Greg Donovan (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa East) for nine strikeouts to keep the Blue Devils off of the scoreboard.

Offensively, the Warhawks notched two more home runs for the season when Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa East) and Tom Corcoran (Rochester, MN/Rochester) (senior/Rochester, Minn.) both went yard.  Donovan's trip around the bases came in the bottom of the first while Corcoran touched all four to lead off the fourth inning.

Billy Johnson (Kenosha/Kenosha Tremper) and Mike Kenseth (Milwaukee/West Allis Hale) were the only two Warhawks to record multiple hit games going 2X4 and 2X3 respectively.  Billy Johnson (Kenosha/Kenosha Tremper) also recorded three RBI's in the game and has an eleven game hitting streak.

Matt Phipps recorded the loss for the Blue Devils who are 9-14 this season.  Phipps is 0-3 on the year.

The Warhawks, now 15-4 this season, will play UW-Stout again on Monday, this time in Whitewater, in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm at Prucha Field.  The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Sunday, April 13 but was changed due to weather conditions.
