UW-W Seventh in NCAA Track, All-Americans in Three Events

UW-Whitewater finished seventh in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship hosted by Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio Friday-Saturday, March 14-15.  Warhawk athletes earned All-American honors in three events.

UW-W has finished among the top fifteen teams in the Division III championship seven times in the last eight years.  The Warhawks have also finished among the top ten outdoors five of the last six years.

Jon Schellin (Columbus/Columbus) led the Warhawk contingent Saturday, finishing second in the 55 meter hurdles.  He broke the school record, his own record, with a time of 7.49.  Jonathon Garcia of Massachusetts-Dartmouth won the event in 7.46.  Schellin, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion, also earned All-America honors at the 2007 NCAA III indoor meet, placing seventh.

Also Saturday, UW-W's Dan Hytinen (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) competed in the shot put, but did not advance to the finals with his best of 48-1.75.  Hytinen has earned All-America recognition four times, placing seventh in the shot indoors last year, and three times outdoors with the discus, including winning the title in 2007.  Bobby Riley of UW-La Crosse won the shot put Saturday at 55-7.

Friday's competition for UW-Whitewater included a pair of All-America finishes.  The distance medley relay of Brakken Kraker (West Allis/West Allis Central), Matt Kovnesky (Fort Atkinson/Fort Atkinson), Eric Keen (Monroe/Monroe) and Brian Butzler (Beloit/Beloit Turner) finished fifth in 10:06.68.  UW-Platteville won the event in 9:59.71.  Keen and Butzler added to their All-America collection, with Butzler earning it his fourth time (second mile indoors 2007, third 1500 outdoor 2007, seventh indoor mile 2006, and cross country fall 2007), and Keen placed fifth in the 800 outdoors in 2006.  The winner of the 2008 distance medley relay was UW-Platteville in 9:59.71.

Derek Stanley (Verona/Verona) finished sixth in the long jump at 23-1.25, the third time he has earned All-America honors for indoor track and seventh time in his UW-W athletic career (including twice outdoors in track and twice in football).  Beresford Brown of Moravian College won the long jump at 23-11.75.

Freshman Aron Kehoe (Monroe/Monroe) finished ninth in the preliminaries of the 800 meters, clocking 1:56.17, which was ninth in the field, with the top eight advancing to the finals.  Peter Kosgei of Hamilton College (NY) ran a 1:51.97, the top time in Division III this season.
