#4 Warhawks Top Norse 68-55

How did they do it?  Well they left Tuesday evening to get ahead of the storm, and Decorah, Iowa wasn't in the path of the storm ... oh you mean how did UW-Whitewater manage to get a game in and defeat Luther College 68-55 Wednesday evening in Decorah, Iowa.

Just as the winter storm shut down much of southern Wisconsin the Warhawks shut down Austin Bildsteinn and the rest of the Norse.  Bildstein, a senior guard who came in averaging 13 points per game, scored just five points on 2-8 shooting.  The Norse combined to shoot just 39% from the field.

Luther led 16-9 with 9:15 left in the first half, but UW-W outscored the Norse 23-4 to open a 32-20 lead before Luther scored the last two baskets of the half to make it 32-24 Whitewater.  Forward Cory Brezovar (New Berlin/Eisenhower) and guards Myles McKay (Milwaukee/Menomonee Falls) and Matt Goodwin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) combining to provide 75% of Whitewater's points, with eight apiece. 

Early in the second half Luther cut the margin to four, 41-37, and managed to stay within striking distance for the first ten minutes.  McKay hit back-to-back three's at 10:19 and 8:09 to boost Whitewater to a 53-40 lead and it stayed in double figures the rest of the way, reaching eighteen points twice.

McKay led the Warhawks with 19 points and 8 rebounds, also adding 2 steals and 2 assists.  Goodwin contributed 16 points.  The duo shot an economical 15-24 from the field (McKay 8-14, Goodwin 7-10).  Junior forward Zac Ruckebeil led Luther with 9 points and 8 rebounds.

Whitewater, 17-3 and ranked fourth in the D3hoops.com poll, won its fourth straight game and for the tenth time in its last eleven games.  Luther, 6-14 overall, lost is third in a row and seventh in its last eight outings.

UW-W will return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday at UW-Stout.  The next home game for the Warhawks will be Wednesday, February 20 at 7:00 versus UW-Oshkosh in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.
