#1 Warhawks Trumped by #24 Pointers

The Warhawk women's basketball team, ranked first in the national Division III polls, lost for the first time this season, 84-76 to UW-Stevens Point Saturday evening in the Quandt Fieldhouse in Stevens Point, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Warhawks led early, and were able to bring the margin within three points, 26-23 at 7:22.  At that point, UW-SP went on a 9-0 scoring streak to make the score 35-23 at 4:14.  The Warhawks answered witha  12-4 scoring streak to end the half with a score of 39-34 Stevens Point. 


The second half began with a Heidi Sonntag (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) three to bring the UW-W deficit to one, 39-38.  Not much later, Tiffany Morton (Beloit/Memorial) added two points to regain a Warhawk lead, the first since 17:46 in the first half.  The Pointers and Warhawks continued to battle back and forth keeping the deficit to one point until 14:07 when the Pointers went on an unanswered ten point scoring streak.  The largest deficit in the game was with 10:20 remaining and the Pointers leading 60-47.  Whitewater pulled within seven, 68-61 at 5:19, but unable to regain the lead for the remainder of the game.

Leading the Warhawks in points was Tiffany Morton (Beloit/Memorial) with 23 on top of her 14 rebounds, her third double-double this year.  Rachel Woolever (Colfax/Colfax) added 10 points, while Sarah Moran (Waukesha/South) lead the team with four assists.

The Pointers had four players with double digits lead by Janell Van Gomple with 18, followed by Britta Petersen with 17, Jessi Sporle with 16, and Katie Webber with 11.  Sporle also lead the Pointers with twelve total rebounds.  Andreaw Flease lead UW-SP in assists with six.

As a team, the Warhawks were outrebounded by the Pointers defensively 23-18, but the opposite was true offensively where the Warhawks led 18-13.  The Pointers shot 53% from the field and Whitewater 44%.

The Warhawks are 4-1 overall, and 0-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference, while the Pointers improve to 6-1, 1-0 WIAC.

The next contest for the Warhawks will be Tuesday, December 9, when they will host Wheaton College in Kachel Gymnasium of the Williams Center.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
