The UW-Whitewater men's basketball team, ranked sixth in Division III, topped Cardinal Stritch, 90-68, in a non-conference game Thursday, December 18 in the Kachel Gym of the Williams Center in Whitewater.
Whitewater took over the lead with 17:00 left in the first half and they never looked back. UW-W's largest lead in the first half was ten points and was the score margin at the half, 39-29. The Warhawks shot 55% (16-29) to the Wolves 34% (12-35) from the field in the first half. Second chance shots kept the Wolves within striking distance as they out-rebounded Whitewater on the offensive boards 11-6.
With all of the momentum swinging Whitewater's direction, the Warhawks gradually increased their lead throughout the second half. Whitewater led by as much as 26 in the game with just 1:43 left. The Wolves chipped a couple of points away from the Warhawk lead to the final margin in the closing minute as UW-W went on to win by 22, 90-68.
Whitewater topped Cardinal Stritch in almost every facet of the game. UW-W shot 54% (33-61) from the field to the Wolves' 40% (27-69). The major differences came in rebounds, assists and blocked shots. Whitewater out-rebounded Cardinal Stritch 27-17 on the defensive boards. The Warhawks also blocked five shots and had 17 assists to Cardinal Stritch's zero and 11 respectively.
The main force on offense for the Warhawks was
Myles McKay (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls) with his career high 31 points, shooting 11-19 from the field. The 31 by McKay is the first time a Warhawk has scored 30 or more points this season. He added a team high seven rebounds.
Chris Vines (Milwaukee/Washington) was the only other Warhawk in double digits with ten points.
The Wolves were led by Ian Dobbe with 18 points and team high 7 rebounds. Three other Cardinal Stritch players hit double digits in scoring including Trey Triplett with 13, Pat Barron with 12 and Brandon D'Amico with 10.
The win increases Whitewater's record to 9-1 overall. The Wolves drop to 8-4.
UW-W will compete in The Cru Holiday Classis tournament hosted by Mary-Hardin Baylor in Belton, Texas with a game against LeTourneau at 5:30 pm. They will continue play in the tournament the next night, December 30, against the winner of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Lake Forest College.
The next Warhawk home game will be Saturday, January 3 at 1:00 pm against UW-River Falls.
