The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team, ranked sixth in the D3hoops.com poll, defeated UW-Oshkosh 75-66 tonight, at home, in the Kachel Gym in Whitewater.
The Warhawks were down by as much as seven in the first half with 15:27 left in the half. Whitewater worked its way back to take the lead by four, 36-32, at the end of the half with a strong offensive output by
Matt Goodwin (Milwaukee/King) and
Kori Vernon (Madison/Memorial) with ten points a piece.
Whitewater never relinquished the lead the entire game. Oshkosh came as close as three points with just 1:04 left in the game, 69-66. The Warhawks went on a six point run in the last minute mostly due to free throws after Oshkosh was forced to foul.
Tyson Kingsby (Milwaukee/Custer) led the Warhawks at the line, going 10-10, while UW-W went 17-19 as a team from the line.
Whitewater shot 62% (26-42) from the field to the Titans' 47% (24-51). The rest of the stats were virtually even for the game.
Leading the Warhawks was
Kori Vernon (Madison/Memorial) and
Myles McKay (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls) with 18 and 17 points respectively. Two other Warhawks joined them in double digits, as
Tyson Kingsby (Milwaukee/Custer) had 14, ten coming from the line and
Matt Goodwin (Milwaukee/King) added ten more. Vernon also added eight boards for a team high in rebounds.
D.J. Marsh led Oshkosh with 20 points, a game high 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Dane SeckarAnderson chipped in 16 and Matt Miller added 15 points for the Titans.
The win tonight brings Whitewater's record to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Oshkosh moves to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC.
The Warhawks are in action at home again tomorrow night, Thursday, December 18 against Cardinal Stritch University at 7:00 pm in the Kachel Gymnasium of the Williams Center in Whitewater.
