Three Champions Lead #9 Warhawks at Walker Invite

UW-Whitewater, ranked ninth in the latest poll of NCAA Division III teams, finished second in the Dick Walker Invite hosted by Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa Friday and Saturday.  Austin Bautista (Des Plaines, IL/Maine East), Karl Voeck (Madison/Memorial), and Jon Schmidt (Menomonee Falls/Hartford) won their weight classes for the Warhawks.  The winning school, host Wartburg, is ranked first in the Division III poll.

Team scores were: Wartburg 153, UW-Whitewater 127.5, North Central 103, Cornell 96, Coe 85, Augsburg 52.5, Iowa Central 46, Simpson 46, North Iowa Area CC 40, Grand View 38.5, UW-Platteville 36, Augustana (IL) 19.5, and Knox 2.5.

Bautista, ranked number one in Division III at 141 pounds, added four more wins to his season total, now 13-0.  He defeated Zach McKray of Wartburg 3-2 in the championship match after winning his first three matches by falls.

Voeck also went 4-0, including two pins.  One of the falls came in the title match at 197, where he pinned Nick Shandri of Wartburg.  Voeck is 14-1.

Schmidt, like Bautista and Voeck, went 4-0 in the tourney.  He recorded one pin, and beat John Helgerson of Wartburg 4-2 in the 285 pound final.  Schmidt is 10-0 this season.

Two Warhawks added third place points to the team total.  Tom Trieloff (Janesville/Craig), 157 pounds, and Pat Nagel (Carpentersville, IL/Dundee-Crown), 165, were both 5-1 over the two days.  Nagel's only loss was to the eventual champion of his weight class.  Trieloff is 6-1 and Nagel 7-2 this season.

UW-Whitewater's next competition will be Sunday, December 21 at the FITE duals at Oak Lawn High School in Oak Lawn, Illinois.  They will face the University of Indiana, Eastern Michigan and Harper Community College.
