Warhawks Lose in WIAC Tourney, Hope for NCAA Bid

UW-Whitewater will have to wait.  The Warhawks lost the third place game in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-20) to UW-La Crosse in Eau Claire Saturday afternoon.  UW-W, 29-9 and ranked eleventh in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III poll, will wait until Monday morning (November 10) to find out if it has earned an at-large berth and will be making a seventeenth consecutive appearance in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III championship tournament.

UW-L jumped out to a 15-4 lead in game one and led throughout.  In game two Whitewater led 3-2, and was within 15-13 and 17-15 before UW-L opened a gap late.  UW-W got in front early again in game three, 4-1, but the Eagles scored six consecutive points and never relinquished the lead. 

Liz Benzschawel (Madison/Edgewood) led UW-W with eight kills, with Kelly Sorensen (Madison/Memorial) contributing thirteen digs.  Amber Schoonover had 12 kills for UW-L, Jenna Starck five blocks, and Elizabeth Carlisle 14 digs.

UW-L is 27-11.  UW-Oshkosh, 39-2 and ranked seventh in the AVCA poll, earned the league's automatic berth in the NCAA III tournament with a 3-2 win over host UW-Eau Claire, now 24-12.  Like Whitewater, they will await the national announcement Monday. 

UW-W lost 3-1 in La Crosse October 1 during the WIAC regular season.
