The fourth-seeded Warhawks swept fifth-seeded UW-Platteville, 25-21, 25-13, 25-12, in a first round Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference NCAA Division III volleyball match Tuesday at the Williams Center Volleyball Arena in Whitewater.
Senior Elizabeth Benzschawel (Madison/Edgewood) (Madison/Edgewood) led the Warhawk attack with nine kills in just eleven attempts (.818 hitting percentage). Junior Melissa Zuleger (Little Chute/Little Chute) (Little Chute/Little Chute) added seven kills and freshman Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) (Janesville/Craig) six for Whitewater.
Freshman Christina DeGroot (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) had a game-high five service aces, while freshman Megan Peterson (Burlington/Burlington) (Burlington/Burlington) added two. Freshman Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) (Naperville, IL/Central) led the Warhawks with 13 digs.
Pioneer senior Rachel Chapman and sophomore Melissa Hillebrand led the visitors with seven kills apiece. Chapman had a game-high 14 digs.
All three other first round WIAC matches concluded in sweeps by the higher seed. Top-seeded UW-Eau Claire beat eighth-seeded UW-Stout, 25-11, 25-15, 25-23; second-seeded UW-Oshkosh defeated seventh-seeded UW-Superior, 25-13, 25-23, 25-23; and third-seeded UW-La Crosse bested UW-River Falls, 26-24, 25-17, 25-17.
Whitewater advances to play Eau Claire on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Eau Claire will host the semifinal matchup. Oshkosh will host La Crosse at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
