Warhawks defeat the Pioneers

UW-Whitewater upped its mark to 2-0 with an 89-68 win over Carroll University Tuesday evening in the Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

With Carroll leading 12-11, UW-W's Kevin Koski (Jefferson/Jefferson) hit a jumper to give the Warhawks a lead it never gave back.  Whitewater eventually built the halftime margin to 39-29.

Carroll pulled back within six points, twice, 41-35 at 18:51 and 45-39 with 17:46 left.  The Pioneers kept the lead under double digits until 64-53 with 9:19 left.  From that point on UW-W's lead was never less than double digits, with the final scoring the largest lead in the game.

Whitewater, ranked fourth and fifth in the two preseason polls of NCAA III teams, was led by senior guard Myles McKay (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls) who scored a game-high 26 points, hitting 9-13 from the field.  Center Dustin Mitchell (Lac Du Flambeau/Lakeland) had a career high 16 points, hitting six of his seven field goal attempts.  Also in double figures for the Warhawks were forwards Cory Vernon, with 14, and Billy Kolinske (Waukesha/Catholic Memorial), with 13.  Kolinske also tied for game rebounding honors with seven.  Matt Goodwin (Milwaukee/King) contributed five assists.

Carroll, 0-2, had three players in double figures, led by point guard John Hoch's 19.   Hoch went 8-8 from the line.  Wes Ladwig chipped in with 18 and Josh Gould had 14.  Gould also had seven rebounds, and Hoch dished out five assists.

UW-Whitewater shot almost sixty percent (.596) from the field, including 65% in the second half.  The Warhawks also enjoyed a 35-19 rebound advantage.

UW-W will play in the Lewis and Clark Classic on November  21st and 22nd.  First the Warhawks will face Whitman College followed by Lewis and Clark.
