The fifteenth ranked Warhawk women's volleyball team traveled to UW-Platteville on Tuesday and defeated the Pioneers 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-23). The Warhawks are now 14-6 overall and 3-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fall to 12-11 overall, and 2-2 in the WIAC.
After dropping the first game, the Warhawks came back to win the last three games. This match marks the fourth time this season that Whitewater has rallied to win the last three games after losing the first.
Caitlin Hogan (New London/New London) led the Warhawks with thirteen kills, a season high. Hogan was the only Warhawk to notch double-digit kills. Strong offensive performances were also turned in by Kelly Sorenson and
Keri Klotzbuecher (Clintonville/Clintonville) who recorded eight and five kills respectively.
Defensively,
Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) tallied thirty-six digs, a season-high for the team and a career high for Bauer. The thirty-six digs ties Bauer for third in the UW-Whitewater record book for digs in a match. Bauer ties a total recorded previously by two other Warhawks (Angie Wildish and
Kristina Conlin (Williams Bay/Williams Bay)).
Christina Degroot (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) again led the way for Whitewater with twenty-six assists.
Fifteen different UW-Whitewater players saw court time in the match. The Warhawks, who lead the WIAC in blocks per game, recorded twenty blocks in the match to UW-Platteville's eight. The Warhawks also recorded six service aces to the Poineers' four.
The Warhawks travel to New York this coming weekend for a tournament at New York University. The Warhawks will compete against SUNY-New Paltz, Connecticut College, New York University and the Rochester Institute of Technology. The team returns to home competition on October 15 to face UW-Stevens Point at 7:00 pm in the Williams Center Volleyball Gym.
