Warhawks Sweep Titans and Pioneers

The UW-Whitewater women's volleyball team defeated Illinois Wesleyan 3-0 (25-12, 27-25, 26-24) in their first match of the UW-Whitewater Invitational on Saturday in the Williams Center Volleyball Arena.  The Warhawks improve to 24-6 with the victory while IWU falls to 16-14.

The first game was somewhat one-sided in favor of Whitewater. Right off the bat, the Warhawks took the lead 2-1 and took charge putting up seven straight points to make the score 9-1. After some rallying back by the Titans, Whitewater again went on a 3-0 run from 15-8 to 18-8. The Titans took a time out and scored right out of the huddle. The game ended with the largest lead of the game at 25-12.

Despite the large leads in the first game, the last two games were full of rallies and back and forth scoring. In game two, the largest lead took place during the middle of the game with the Warhawks up 14-9. The Titans soon brought the score up to 15-15 and took the lead at 16-15, which was their first lead since the opening serves of the game. The momentum continued for the Titans and started to pull away at 20-17. Three set points later, Whitewater proved victorious ending the game at 27-25.

The third game was similar to the second. There was much back and forth scoring, the largest lead was 14-9 Warhawks and the Titans fought their way up from a deficit to take a 20-17 lead. The fight for the win was back and forth but the Warhawks took the win with a score of 26-24.

Leading in kills for Whitewater was Keri Klotzbuecher (Clintonville/Clintonville) with thirteen and Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) had a total of fifteen digs. The team had a total of eight service aces with Kelly Sorenson contributing four and Christina DeGroot (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) with three.

Next, Whitewater defeated Carroll College 3-0 with scores of 27-25, 25-21, 25-16. Whitewater ups their record to 25-6 overall and Carroll College is now 9-17.

Game one was back and forth most of the game. Carroll College took charge first with a 4-0 run bringing the score from 6-5 to 6-9. Whitewater fought back but Carroll was not willing to give them too much of a lead. The teams tied at 11, 12, and 13 and after that, Whitewater took a small lead of 15-13. A time out was called later on in the game and Carroll scored five straight points out of the huddle. Not too long after, another timeout was called at 22-22. Whitewater pulled off the win with a score of 27-25.

Game two was close as well. There were many runs of two by either team throughout the game. Whitewater went on a 5-1 run from 18-14 to 23-15. Once again, Carroll fought back and scored five straight points to bring the score to 23-20. The game ended with Whitewater winning 25-21.

The final game started from 1-1 to Whitewater taking a commanding lead of 7-1. It soon went to 11-3 which was the largest lead of the game. Carroll College fought back to close the gap to 12-10 but was unsuccessful in the end with the Warhawks winning 25-16.

Natalie Starken (Muskego/Muskego) led the Warhawks with 11 kills and Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) had 21 total digs. Jillian Neave (Salem/Westosha Central) had three service aces out of the eight for the team.

The Warhawks will be hosting another tournament on Friday, October 31 to Saturday, November 1. Following the Warhawk tournament will be the WIAC tournament starting Tuesday, November 4.
