Junior guard
Matt Goodwin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) hit a three-pointer as time ran out to give UW-Whitewater, ranked fifteenth in the D3hoops.com poll, a 65-62 win over UW-La Crosse in a game played Wednesday evening at Mitchell Hall in La Crosse.
Whitewater, which trailed by as many as twelve points in the first twenty minutes, trailed at halftime 36-29.
La Crosse still led by seven, 47-40, at 14:53 when the Warhawks went on a 9-0 run to take the lead for the first time in the game. The game was tied three times and the lead changed hands four times from that point on.
Senior forward
Rob Perry (Milwaukee/Dominican) hit three-pointer at 1:24 to pull Whitewater back in to a tie, 60-60. After a
Josh King (Janesville/Craig) steal, Perry was fouled and hit two free throws to make it 62-60 Whitewater with 0:37 left. UW-L's Tony Mane hit a jumper with eighteen seconds left to knot the game at 62-62, setting up Whitewater's final possession and Goodwin's winning shot.
Goodwin led both teams with 21 points. He was followed by Perry with 12, and junior forward Cory Vernon added 10. UW-W junior guard
Myles McKay (Milwaukee/Menomonee Falls) was the game's leading rebounder, with eight, and he led both teams with four steals. Mane topped the Eagles with 17 points, with Billy Kegler added 11.
La Crosse built their halftime lead by shooting 58% from the field and holding UW-W to 30%. The Warhawks made up the difference at the free throw line, hitting 23-31, while the Eagles were 5-7 for the game.
UW-W is 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It is the second straight Houdini act for the Warhawks, having defeated UW-River Falls 88-82 in overtime Saturday. UW-L is 6-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Whitewater will play at UW-Eau Claire Saturday. The next home game for the Warhawks will be Saturday, January 19 versus UW-Stout. That contest will tip off at 5:00 in Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
