Warhawk Men Hold on to First Place

UW-Whitewater retained its share of first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 80-67 win over UW-La Crosse Wednesday evening in Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

La Crosse led by nine, 15-6, with 12:39 left in the half.  Whitewater went on a 17-2 run to take a 23-17 lead at 7:20.  UW-W led 37-26 at the half.  The Warhawks held a double-digit lead throughout the second half, twice by 23, the last time at 63-40 with 9:52 remaining.  The final margin was as close as the Eagles would get in the second half.

The Warhawks used balanced scoring, with five players in double figures.  Junior guard Matt Goodwin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) scored 16, junior guard Myles McKay (Milwaukee/Menomonee Falls) 15, junior forward Kori Vernon (Madison/Memorial) 14, junior forward Billy Kolinske (Big Bend/Waukesha Memorial) 13 and sophomore guard Kevin Koski (Jefferson/Jefferson) 10.  Vernon was also the game's leading rebounder with seven.  UW-L sophomore forward Andrew Haass was the game's leading scorer with 18, with freshman guard Tony Mane adding 14.  Senior guard Chris Fehrenbach scored 13 and senior forward Billy Kegler 12.  Mane added a game-high four assists.  Kegler went 4-4 from the three-point line.

Whitewater had a 38-24 rebound advantage and a season-high eight blocked shots, four by sophomore center Dustin Mitchell (Lac de Flambeau/Lakeland).

UW-W, 15-3 overall and 8-2 in the WIAC, is tied for first place with UW-Platteville.  The Warhawks are ranked eighth in this week's D3hoops.com poll.  UW-La Crosse is 9-10 overall and 4-6 in the WIAC.

UW-Whitewater will host UW-Eau Claire Saturday at 5:00 in Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
