Warhawks Defeat Norse, Win Seventh Straight

The UW-Whitewater men's soccer team traveled to Decorah, Iowa on Thursday and defeated Luther College by a score of 2-0.  The Warhawks, found in the “others receiving votes” category of the latest D3Kicks.com top 25 poll, are winners of seven straight.  In the last seven games the Warhawks have outscored their opponents 35-1 while six of the games have been shutouts.

 

The Warhawks would strike just seventeen minutes into the game when Matt Gehn (Oregon/Oregon) (sophomore, Oregon) scored his second goal of the season on a pass from Luke Mangognia (Hoffman Estates, IL/Palatine) (sophomore, Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd).  Luke Buchholz (Whitewater/Whitewater) (freshman, Whitewater) recorded his eighth goal of the season later in the half, at the thirty-three minute mark, when he netted a ball that was loose in the box.

 

Goalkeeper EJ Sesselmann (Green Bay/Notre Dame) (senior, Green Bay/Notre Dame) notched his sixth shutout of the season denying five Luther shots.  Prior to the match Sesselman maintained a .39 goals against average, ranking him twenty-first in the country.

 

As of September 23, the Warhawks were ranked tenth in the country (out of 380 teams) in scoring offense (4.13 per game) and eleventh in shutout percentage (75%).

 

The Warhawks (8-1) are back in action this weekend when they are on the road for two more matches. Saturday, September 29, they will be at Ripon College for a 4 pm match, and Sunday, September 30, they will be at St. Norbert College for a 3 pm match.  UW-W's next home game is on October 11 when they will host Aurora University for a 3 pm game at Fiskum Field.  Admission is free for all spectators.
