The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated UW-Platteville 3-1 (30-20, 30-20, 28-30, 30-22) in a match in Williams Center on the UW-W campus Wednesday evening.
Warhawk senior Rebekah Nelson (Delavan/Williams Bay) (RS, Delavan/Williams Bay) became the twelfth player in school history to amass 1,000 career kills, reaching the milestone to put Whitewater up 5-4 in game one. Nelson joins teammate Carley Polk (Dousman/Mukwonago) (MB, senior, Mukwonago) on the exclusive list. Nelson and Polk are just the second set of teammates to reach the 1,000 kill mark, joining Allison Erickson and Melinda Erickson, who reached the milestone in 2000 (their junior year).
Polk, with 13 kills, Nelson, 11, and Abby Schultz (Appleton/Kimberly) (OH, sr, Appleton/Kimberly), 10, were in double figures kills for the Warhawks. Schultz added 23 digs and Kristina Conlin (Williams Bay/Williams Bay) (L, so, Williams Bay) contributed 20. Sara Theis (MB, sr, Lodi) had seven blocks (2 solo, 5 assists).
Rachel Chapman (OH, jr, Endeavor/Portage) led UW-P with 13 kills, and Lisa Bell (MH, so, Dyersville, IA) contributed 10. Emily Walker (OH, fr, Dubuque, IA) had 20 digs and Rochelle Ripp (Lodi/Lodi) (DS, jr, Lodi) added 19. Walker also had four assisted blocks.
Whitewater hit .165 in the match, Platteville .100.
UW-W, ranked third in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III poll, is 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-P is 12-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.
UW-Whitewater will host the UW-Whitewater Invitational Friday the 28th with a 3:00 start time and Saturday the 29th with a 10:00 start time.
