The UW-Whitewater men's soccer team was edged by seventeenth ranked Wartburg College 2-1 in overtime in a match played in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Sunday night.
Wartburg's Casey Johnson put the first point on the board at 39:00 on shot from twenty yards out on the only score in the first half. UW-W tied the game at the 83:00 mark on the first collegiate goal by Dan Montanye (Mukwonago/Mukwonago) (freshman, Mukwonago) with an assist by David Braden (Milton/Milton) (senior, Milton). Regulation ended 1-1.
Less than a minute into overtime a Wartburg player was tripped in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Wartburg's Luke McClyman netted the winning goal, officially at 91:00.
Whitewater had 15 shots on goal, Wartburg 14, while WC had an edge in corner kicks, 8-6.
#E.J. Sesselmann# (senior, Green Bay/Notre Dame) made six saves in goal for UW-W, while Trent Mitchell blocked four shots for Wartburg.
UW-W, 1-1, will play at home Saturday and Sunday. The Warhawks will host Finlandia College September 8 at 2:00 and Edgewood College at 2:00 September 9 for the annual Family Day game.
