The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated UW-La Crosse 3-1 (30-17, 21-30, 30-27, 30-13) in a matchup of ranked teams in Williams Center on the UW-W campus Wednesday evening.
UW-W, ranked third in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III poll, raised its record to 11-2 overall. UW-La Crosse, ranked nineteenth, is also 11-2. The match was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
The Warhawks had three players in double figures in kills. Carley Polk (Dousman/Mukwonago) (MB, sr, Dousman/Mukwonago) and Kelly Sorensen (Madison/Memorial) (OH, so, Madison/Memorial) had 14 apiece, and Abby Schultz (Appleton/Kimberly) (OH, sr, Appleton/Kimberly) added 13. Sorensen also led UW-W with 21 digs. Rebekah Nelson (Delavan/Williams Bay) (RS, sr, Delavan/Williams Bay) had four service aces in the match and 18 digs. Kristina Conlin (Williams Bay/Williams Bay) (L, so, Williams Bay) was credited with 36 digs, which ties for the third highest match total in school history. Kate Lazotte (Stoughton/Stoughton) (S, sr, Stoughton) contributed 48 assists for Whitewater.
La Crosse was led by Brianne Stankus (RS, fr, Burlington) and Katelyn Carlson (OH, sr, Rochester, MN/Mayo ) had 16 and 13 kills, respectively. Amber Schoonover (L, jr, Tomah) led five Eagles in double figures in digs, with 19. Samantha Dries (S, sr, Pine Island, MN) had 35 assists for UW-L.
Whitewater hit .212 in the match, La Crosse .137. The Eagles had eight ball handling errors, Whitewater one. Whitewater had seven service errors, La Crosse 5.
UW-Whitewater's next match will be Wednesday, September 26 against UW-Platteville at Whitewater with a 7:00 start time.
