The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, ranked third in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III poll, defeated fourteenth ranked University of LaVerne (Calif.) 3-2 (31-29, 30-19, 27-30, 25-30, 15-13) Friday in the Teri Clemens Invitational at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri.
UW-W won with a .371 hitting percentage, their highest this season. Rebekah Nelson (Delavan/Williams Bay) (senior, OH, Delavan/Williams Bay) had seven kills and hit .700, Carley Polk (Dousman/Mukwonago) (senior, MB, Dousman/Mukwonago) had six kills and hit .625, and Kelly Sorensen (Madison/Memorial) (sophomore, OH, Madison/Memorial) led the team with eight kills while hitting .700. Kate Lazotte (Stoughton/Stoughton) (senior, S, Stoughton) dished out a season high 67 assists. Five Warhawks recorded double figure digs, led by Tina Conlin's (sophomore, L, Williams Bay) 17.
UW-Whitewater is 9-1. The Warhawks will play two more matches in the Clemens tourney, facing second-ranked Juniata College (Penn.) at noon Saturday, and then taking on host Washington University, ranked fourth nationally, at 5:00. Juniata won the 2006 NCAA III title, defeating Washington University in the final with UW-W tying for third place in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Volleyball Championship. UW-W won the NCAA III title in 2005.
LaVerne is now 2-3.
UW-Whitewater's next home match will be the team's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener, Wednesday, September 19 at 7:00 in Williams Center versus UW-La Crosse.
