UW-Whitewater lost the title game of its Whitewater Invitational I, falling to Birmingham Southern College (AL) 3-2 in a match that saw the five games separated by a total of eleven points (30-28, 28-30, 30-28, 28-30, 15-12). The Warhawks defeated Wheaton College (IL) 3-1 (28-30, 30-21, 30-23, 30-28) to move in to the tourney title game.
Whitewater had defeated Birmingham Southern Friday evening 3-1. UW-W also topped the State University of New York-Brockport 3-0 Friday.
Four Warhawks racked up double figure kills in the win over Wheaton. Abby Schultz (Appleton/Kimberly) (senior, Appleton/Kimberly) led the team with 15, with Stephanie Gardon (West Bend/West) (junior, West Bend/West) adding 11, and Kelly Annen (Madison/West) (junior, Madison/West) and Alyse Karls (Dane/Lodi) (sophomore, Lodi) contributing 10 each. Whitewater also had five players in double figure digs, led by Annen's 14.
In the rematch with Birmingham Southern, Carley Polk (Dousman/Mukwonago) (senior, Dousman/Mukwonago) led the way with 18 kills and 5 blocks. Kristina Conlin (Williams Bay/Williams Bay) (sophomore, Williams Bay) was credited with 26 digs, and Kate Lazotte (Stoughton/Stoughton) (senior, Stoughton) passed off 58 assists. The Warhawks had just one ball-handling error in the match, but eleven service miscues. Birmingham Southern is in its first year of National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III affiliation after a number of years as a Division I school.
UW-W, 3-1 and ranked third in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III poll, will host Elmhurst College (IL) Tuesday at 7:00 in the Williams Center volleyball arena.
