UW-Whitewater, ranked sixth in the D3hoops.com national poll, fell to UW-Oshkosh 80-74 at Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin Wednesday night.
UW-W trailed 34-27 at the half. The Warhawks cut the margin to one, 40-39, at 14:21 on a layup by sophomore guard Kevin Koski (Jefferson/Jefferson). Oshkosh opened some daylight with a 9-2 run, making it 49-41 at 12:08. Whitewater was back within three, 54-51, on a pair of free throws by Kori Vernon (Madison/Memorial) at 7:51. Oshkosh put together another 8-2 run, making it 62-53 at 5:50, but Whitewater came back to within 62-60 on a two free throws by junior guard Myles McKay (Milwaukee/Menomonee Falls) at 2:52. Oshkosh responded with a 14-5 bulge to seal the game, giving them a 76-65 lead with 29 seconds left.
Whitewater was led by junior forward Kori Vernon (Madison/Memorial) with a season high 17 points. Junior guards Matt Goodwin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) and McKay added 12 each, and senior forward Rob Perry (Milwaukee/Dominican) led the team with nine rebounds. Oshkosh had three players with 20+ points. Junior guard Matt Miller scored 24, hitting 5-6 from beyond the arc; forward D.J. Marsh scored 23 going 7-7 from the line, and junior forward Dane Seckar-Anderson scored 22, hitting 10 of his 15 shots from the floor while leading both teams with five assists.
UW-W is 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Oshkosh improved to 6-0, 2-0 in league play.
Whitewater will host UW-Superior Saturday, December 8 at 3:00 in Kachel Gym in Williams Center. The game will be preceded by the Warhawk women hosting UW-Superior at 1:00.
