Warhawks Make it Ten in a Row

Fifth-ranked UW-Whitewater cruised to an 88-61 win over Coe College Tuesday evening in Kachel Gym in Williams Center.  UW-W, now 10-0, gave the Kohawks, 8-1, their first loss of the season.

Led by 20 points from sophomore guard Heidi Sonntag (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran), the Warhawks held 10-2, 20-6, and 26-8 leads on the way to a 49-21 margin at halftime.  Whitewater shot 55% in the first half, while limiting Coe to 29% from the floor. 

Sonntag was the game's leading scorer, winding up with 23 points on 10-15 shooting, including 3-3 from the three-point arc.  Junior center Tiffany Morton (Beloit/Memorial), 12 points, senior center Lindsey Buechner (Cross Plains/Middleton), 11, and sophomore guard Kelsey Hendrickson (Monroe/Monroe), 11, also scored in double figures for the Warhawks.  Senior guard Erin Jones topped Coe with 15, with freshman guard Kayla Lincoln adding 12 and sophomore center Brittany Norris 10.  Buechner also contributed a game-high eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. 

Whitewater forced 27 turnovers, and Mary Donohoo (Wauwatosa/West)'s three steals led the team to a total of sixteen. 

UW-W used a full court game to keep the tempo up, with ten players seeing double figure minutes (and another played nine minutes).   The Warhawks scored just above their season average of 86.5 points per game.

Whitewater's next game will be December 29 in the Surf City Classic in Irvine, California, where the Warhawks will play Widener College (PA).  The next home game will be a return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, with UW-La Crosse visiting Williams Center January 9 at 7:00.
