Warhawks Defeat Edgewood, Break Century Mark in Back-to-Back Games

UW-Whitewater, ranked sixth in both national Division III poll, improved their overall record to 8-0 with a 104-62 victory over Edgewood College, 4-4, in a non-conference game at the Todd Wehr Edgedome Wednesday night. The Warhawks equals the third highest score in school history, tying a total accomplished December 10, 1991 against Wisconsin Lutheran College.  Adding to the accomplishment, UW-W has scored 100 or more points in a game just seven times in school history, never even twice in one season --- and this team hit the mark in back-to-back games, scoring 106 (second best in school history) in a win over UW-Superior Saturday.

The Eagles stayed even with the Warhawks until the 14:35 mark at 10-10. Sophomore Dana Thompson (Belleville/Belleville) made a layup that gave UW-W the lead for good, but Edgewood kept the game close for a while.  The Warhawks never had a lead of more than 10 points until sophomore Heidi Sonntag (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) hit a 3-pointer with 5:05 left in the first half to give UW-Whitewater a 35-22 lead.  The Eagles then scored back-back baskets to pull back to within 9 points at the 4:24 mark, but UW-W ended the half on 19-0 scoring run for 54-26 halftime lead that sealed the deal.

The Warhawks outscored Edgewood 50-36 in the second half to allow them to cruise to victory and hit the century mark for the second straight contest.

Outstanding shooting for the Warhawks led them to victory.  UW-W shot 39-73 (53.4%) from the field and 19-22 (86.4%) from the free throw line.  The Eagles shot the ball fairly well (26-57 for 45.6%), but turned the ball over 26 times during the contest and were out-rebounded by UW-Whitewater 42-23.  UW-W committed only 16 turnovers in the fast-paced game.

Junior center Tiffany Morton (Beloit/Memorial) led the Warhawks in scoring with 22 points on 9-13 shooting.  Morton also recorded eight rebounds, five assists, and three blocks.  Sonntag shot 7-10 from the field and 3-4 from 3-point range and finished with 17 points for UW-W.  Senior center Lindsey Buechner (Cross Plains/Middleton), sophomore Kelsey Hendrickson (Monroe/Monroe), and Thompson also finished in double figures for UW-Whitewater with thirteen, twelve, and twelve points respectively.

Edgewood Junior Megan Scheele led all scorers with 27 points and had a game-high 10 rebounds.  Kacy Sporle added 15 points and Janelle Gosh added 10 points for the Crusaders.

UW-Whitewater resumes play on December 15, when they travel to Decorah, IA to take on Luther College for a 7:00 tipoff.
