Rob Perry (Milwaukee/Dominican)" width="150" align="left" src="/images/mbball/2007/11/14/Rob-Perry.jpg" />The UW-Whitewater men's basketball team opened the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an upset, with the twentieth ranked Warhawks defeating number two UW-Stevens Point 83-77 Saturday night in Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
Whitewater led by seven points three times in the first half, but a 9-2 run late in the half tied the game and the teams went into the locker room with just a point separating them, 35-34 Whitewater.
With 7:27 left in the game Whitewater had built a 68-59 lead, but the Pointers cut the lead to 75-74 by out-scoring the Warhawks over the next six minutes. All of Whitewater's final eight points came from the free throw line, four of them from guard Myles McKay (Milwaukee/Menomonee Falls), to secure the win for the Warhawks.
Whitewater shot 62% from the floor, including 68% in the second half. Point shot 48% in the game. Whitewater also used a big advantage from the free throw line, hitting 26 of 32, while the Pointers were making 7 of 12 free throws.
Warhawk forward Rob Perry (Milwaukee/Dominican), led both teams with 23 points, and McKay added 19. Perry also led both teams with eight rebounds, with Kevin Koski (Jefferson/Jefferson) leading the Warhawks with six assists. The Pointers were led by Steve Hicklin's 18 points, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. Brian Beamish chipped in with six assists and six rebounds, both tops for UW-SP.
Whitewater improves to 4-0 overall, 1-0 in the WIAC. UW-Stevens Point is 3-1 and 0-1.
Whitewater will play at UW-Oshkosh Wednesday, December 5. The next game for the Warhawks will be Saturday, December 8 at 3:00 against UW-Superior.
