Warhawks Clinch Title, NCAA Berth with Win at Stout

Box Score

With the help of a record-setting performance by Jeff Schebler (Davenport, IA/Assumption) and six turnovers by the Blue Devils, UW-Whitewater clinched its third consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, and a berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III with a 26-10 win over UW-Stout in Menomonie Saturday afternoon.

The Warhawks, ranked second in one national poll and third in the other two, scored first Saturday afternoon.  Schebler, a sophomore placekicker, kicked a 32-yard field goal at 6:36 in the first to put Whitewater up 3-0.  Later in the period, at the 4:32 mark, UW-W used a one play drive, a 63 yard Justin Beaver (Palmyra/Palmyra-Eagle) run, to make it 10-0.  Stout came back with an eight play, 73 yard drive, with Shawn Korth catching Tanner Kattre's eleven yard pass to make it 10-7 Whitewater at the end of the first quarter.

A Danny Jones (Pleasanton, CA/Amador Valley) to Aaron Rusch (Hartford/Hartford) eleven yard TD pass ended a 76 yard drive for UW-W at 14:46 in the second to increase Whitewater's margin to 17-7.  Stout picked up a Whitewater fumble at the 50 yard line, and turned that in to a 43 yard Brandon Raciborski field goal to cut the margin to a touchdown, 17-10 Whitewater with 8:00 left in the half.

Schebler went back to work, hitting a 35-yard field goal at 2:33 to close the scoring for the half with UW-W in the lead 20-10.

The only scoring in the second half was provided by Schebler.  He made a 22 yard field goal with nineteen seconds left in the third, and added the final points of the game on a 29 yard field goal with 2:41 remaining.

Schebler's four field goals today give him nineteen for the season, breaking the record of eighteen he had established last year.

Whitewater rushed for 301 yards in the game, 248 of them coming on 44 attempts by Justin Beaver (Palmyra/Palmyra-Eagle).  Whitewater's defense, which forced six Blue Devil turnovers, limited Stout to 43 yards rushing and 198 yards of total offense.

Stout's Stephen Schils was credited with twenty tackles, eight of them solo, plus a tackle for a loss and a fumble recovered.  The twenty tackles is the most by a Warhawk opponent this season.  Linebacker AJ Raebel (Cary Grove, IL/Cary Grove) led UW-W defenders with nine tackles (two solo), a tackle for a loss and two passes broken up.

UW-W, 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the WIAC, will host UW-Platteville Saturday, November 10 at 1:00 in Perkins Stadium in the regular season finale.  The NCAA III playoffs begin November 17.

UW-Stout is 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the WIAC.
