UW-Whitewater finished sixth in a ten-team field at the Maverick Challenge, played Thursday-Saturday in Oak Forest, Illlinois. The tournament team finishes were determined by match win-loss standings, not total pinfall.
In Thursday's action UW-W beat Grambling 986-861, with Katie Gould (Naperville, IL/Waubonsie Valley) rolling a 232. Minnesota-Mankato beat UW-W 986-794, and the University of Nebraska beat Whitewater 1037-947 despite Lynn Smith (Dixon, IL/Dixon)'s 225. Whitewater beat Elmhurst College 866-788, and lost to Central Missouri 901-787 to close play Friday.
The Warhawks got hot Friday, winning four of five matches. UW-W lost to Alabama A&M 937-875, then reeled off four straight wins. Whitewater defeated Florida A&M 898-811, led by Rachel Burgess (Lombard, IL/Willowbrook)' 212. The Warhwks followed that up with a 981-822 win over Southern University, with Kayla Waldman (Fort Wayne, IN/R. Nelson Snider) rolling a team season high 253. An 898-749 win over Fontbonne followed, and the day two of the tourney concluded with a 875-868 win over Grambling with Lynn Smith (Dixon, IL/Dixon) rolling a 225.
In Saturday's five matches UW-W went 1-4, opening with a second defeat by Minnesota-Mankato 841-805, and a 1122-978 loss to Nebraska -- despite Burgess' 244 game. Elmhurst then edged the Warhawks 905-874, and that was followed by a loss to Central Missouri. The Warhawks closed on an up note, beating Alabama A&M 988-935.
UW-W went 7-8 in the tournament. The University of Nebraska won the tourney.
Whitewater will roll dual matches against Fontbonne and Elmhurst December 8 in their next action.
