Warhawks Stretch Unbeaten String to Eleven ... Tie #20 Gustavus

Box Score

UW-Whitewater, in the "others receiving votes" category of the D3kicks.com poll, tied Gustavus Adolphus College, ranked twentieth in the poll, 1-1 in double overtime Sunday in Saint Peter, Minnesota.

Gustavus scored scored first, at 31:12, on a Mike Butterworth tally assisted by Matt Strom.  Just three minutes later, at 34:16, the Warhawks tied the match on the first goal of the season by Ryan Boyd (Waunakee/Waunakee) (fr, Waunakee), with an assist from Brett Acree (Hoosick Falls, NY/Whitefish Bay) (jr, Whitefish Bay).

Gustavus had thirteen shots in the match, with UW-W goalie EJ Sesselmann (Green Bay/Notre Dame) (sr, Green Bay/Notre Dame) making three saves.  Whitewater managed eight shots, with Gustie goalie Trevor Brown also credited with three saves.

The Gustavus goal was the first allowed by Whitewater since the University of Saint Thomas (MN) scored late in a 7-1 Whitewater win September 23.  Whitewater's defense racked up a scoreless streak that covered 452:16.  The goal allowed today was just the fourth given up by the Warhawks this season.

Whitewater and Gustavus, both traditional NCAA III powers in the upper midwest, have a history of meeting in crucial games.  The teams also tied 1-1 in the 2005 regular season, then met again that year in the second round of the NCAA III championship tournament.  Although that contest officially ended in a 1-1 tie, Gustavus advanced on a shootout.  GAC holds a 1-4-3 edge in the all-time series.

The tie extends UW-W's unbeaten string at eleven, including ten wins and this tie.  UW-W is 11-1-1 and Gustavus Adolphus is 10-2-1.

UW-W will host Aurora University (IL) Thursday, October 11 at 3:00 on Fiskum Field.  Fiskum Field is on the north end of campus, west of Perkins Stadium.  There is no admission charge for home games.
