Warhawks Win Streak Hits Nine

UW-Whitewater, ranked third in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III poll, improved its record to 18-2 overall and 4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 3-2 (30-18, 30-24, 23-30, 28-30, 15-13) win over UW-Eau Claire Friday night in UW-W's Williams Center.

 

Whitewater had just five hitting errors in the first game and six in the second, while the Blugolds had nine and thirteen, respectively.  The tables were turned in the Blugolds' comeback, as UW-EC cut its errors down to three in game three and four in game four.  At the same time Whitewater committed ten errors in game three and nine in game four.

 

Whitewater hit .166 in the match, UW-Eau Claire hit .168. 

 

UW-W was led by Kelly Sorenson's (so, Madison/Memorial) 15 kills.  Abby Schultz (Appleton/Kimberly) (sr, Appleton/Kimberly) added 12 kills, Carley Polk (Dousman/Mukwonago) (sr, Dousman/Mukwonago) 11, and Rebekah Nelson (Delavan/Williams Bay) (sr, Delavan/Williams Bay) 10.  Kristina Conlin (Williams Bay/Williams Bay) (so, Williams Bay) had 20 digs, and Kate Lazotte (Stoughton/Stoughton) (sr, Stoughton) passed for 54 assists.  Sarah Theis (Lodi/Lodi) (sr, Lodi) had seven blocks (six assisted).

 

Abby Freiborg (jr, Sacred Heart, MN) led the Blugolds with 17 kills.  Katie Fox (jr, Chippewa Falls) added 12 kills, Emily Haese (jr, Athens) 41 assists, and Heather Harnell (sr, Minnetonka, MN) a game-high 27 digs for UW-EC.

 

UW-EC is 13-7 overall and 2-2 in the WIAC.  The Blugolds came in to Friday's match with five wins in their last six matches.

 

Friday's match was part of UW-Whitewater's Family Weekend celebration.  The UW-W volleyball team also sponsored a Breast Cancer Awareness Night, with 417 spectators watching the pink jerseyed Warhawks.

UW-Whitewater plays UW-Superior at the Williams Center volleyball arena Saturday, October 6 at noon. The game is part of UW-Whitewater's annual Family Weekend celebration.
