Box Score
The UW-Whitewater men's soccer team raised it's record to 11-1 with a 3-0 win at the University of Chicago Wednesday.
The normally stingy Whitewater defense went one better in the match. Ten of Whitewater's eleven wins have come by shutout, but UW-W did not even allow a shot on goal in the win over Chicago. UW-W is third in the latest National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III statistics in shutout percentage and sixth in goals against average. The Warhawks have allowed just three goals this season.
UW-W goalkeeper E.J. Sesselmann (Green Bay/Notre Dame) (sr, Green Bay/Notre Dame) lowered his goals against average to 0.26 with the shutout. Chicago took eight shots in the match, but none were on goal. Whitewater took sixteen shots, six on goal.
Luke Buchholz (Whitewater/Whitewater) (fr, Whitewater) got UW-W on the board with what proved to be the winning goal, with an assist from Nick Haertel (Greenfield/Pius) (so, Greenfield/Pius) at 24:13. It was Buchholz's team-high ninth goal of the season. Ben Volz (Wind Lake/Muskego) (sr, Wind Lake/Muskego) scored Whitewater's second goal with the help of a long pass from Matt Gehn (Oregon/Oregon) (so, Oregon) at 83:46, and Bret Acree (jr, Whitefish Bay) was assisted by Luke Mangognia (Hoffman Estates, IL/Palatine) (so, Hoffman Estates, IL/Fremd) at 88:16 to end the scoring.
The University of Chicago is 5-5-0.
UW-Whitewater is in the “others receiving votes” category of this week's D3kicks.com national Division III poll. D3kicks also has UW-W third in the Central Region, while the National Soccer Coaches Association lists the Warhawks fifth in the Central Region.
Whitewater will play at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota Sunday. The next home game for the Warhawks will be Thursday, October 11 at 3:00 with Aurora University visiting Fiskum Field on the north end of campus. GAC is ranked twentieth in the D3kicks.com national poll and Aurora is, like UW-W, among the “others receiving votes”.
