2007-2008 UW-Whitewater Women's Tennis

All Singles Players Advance; Two Doubles Teams in Championship

The UW-Whitewater women's tennis team traveled to Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday to participate in day one of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tennis tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.  All of the Warhawk's singles players advanced to round two by winning their first round match or by way of receiving a bye in the first round.  Two of the three Warhawk doubles teams will be vying for tomorrow's championships in their respective flights.

At number one singles, seeded third, Ingrid Stensvaag (Palatine, IL/Palatine) (sophomore, Palatine, Ill.) defeated Debbie Braun, seeded sixth, of UW-La Crosse, 6-1, 6-0.  Stensvaag will face number two seed Rachel Benn from UW-Stevens Point on Sunday in round two.

At number two singles, seeded third, Jessie Farrar (senior, Rock Island, Ill.) defeated Jenna Abbott, seeded sixth, of UW-Oshkosh, 6-1, 6-1.  Farrar will take on Jodie Czech from UW-Stout, the number two seed, in round two.

At three singles, Kara Amundson (Prairie du Sac/Sauk Prairie) (junior, Sauk Prairie), seeded fifth, defeated fourth seed Whitney Tornow of UW-Oshkosh, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.  Amundson will meet up with number one seed Kristie Carlson of UW-Eau Claire on Sunday.

Lauren Fahl (Brookfield/Brookfield Central) (freshman, Brookfield Central), the number one seed at four singles, had a first round bye and will match up against Emily Bouche of UW-Stevens Point, the fourth seed, in round two.

Five singles player Tiffany Dawson (Cary, IL/Cary Grove) (senior, Cary Grove, Ill.), who received a number two seeding, defeated Anna Schmidt of UW-La Crosse, 6-3, 6-0.  Dawson will play Michelle Hohl, the number three seed from UW-Stout, on Sunday in round two.

Like Fahl, Jenny Woyahn (Waukesha/Waukesha South) (junior, Waukesha South), six singles, received a first round bye from a number one seeding and will face Alison Broerman of UW-Oshkosh in round two.

In doubles play all three flights of Warhawk duos were awarded a first seed and a bye in the first round of competition.  The number one doubles pair of Stensvaag and Dawson were upset by the fourth seeded doubles team from UW-Eau Claire in the second round.  Stensvaag and Dawson will compete for third place on Sunday.  At number two doubles it was Fahl and Farrar that advanced to the championship match.  At number three doubles Amy Siemon (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) (freshman, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Brittany Gering (Greendale/Greendale) (junior, Greendale) defeated a UW-River Falls pair in round two to advance to the championship match on Sunday.

When competition resumes on Sunday the team title will be determined by using a combination of the regular season dual meet standings and the conference championship results.  The finish in the regular season conference standings accounts for one-third of the criteria, while the WIAC championship accounts for the remaining two-thirds.  The second day of the championship will feature the final two rounds of singles matches followed by the final round of doubles matches.

Whitewater is seeking its eighth WIAC title.  The Warhawks won league championships in 1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990 and 2004.
