FULTON, MO — The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team played Westminster to a 2-2 tie on Sunday at Kent & Judith Mueller Stadium. The Warhawks played from behind, but found an equalizer in each half to force the draw with the Blue Jays.
UW-Whitewater pressed from the start, earning a corner in the opening minute and attempting six shots from in the first 15 minutes.
Mason Diercks (Oregon, Wis./Oregon),
Adam Kaup (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln),
Blake Lovick (Deforest, Wis./Deforest) and
Aidan Glancey (Milwaukee, Wis./Whitnall) each forced saves from Danny Monroy during the opening stretch.
Bu Westminster broke through on a first-half penalty kick resulted in a 1-0 lead in the 21st-minute for Westminster.
Austin Waite (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) kept the Warhawks within reach with a save on Blessing Kahiya's shot at 32:25 before
Michael Voulgaris (Van Dyne, Wis./Oshkosh West) answered less than two minutes later in the 35th minute.
Coming off a pass from
Kian Delaney (Oak Forest, Ill./Victor J Andrew), Voulgaris booted the ball from over 50 yards out and received a Warhawk-friendly bounce as the ball went over the head of the Blue Jay keeper.
The Warhawks continued to create after the equalizer, with
Cade Mansfield (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville), Agostino Angelini,
Caleb Bergman (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) and Delaney all putting shots on frame in the final eight minutes, but the half ended tied 1-1.
To start the second half, the Warhawks generated sustained pressure with six shots and a corner in the first 10 minutes, including two shots from
Owen Winegar (Arlington Heights, Ill./Fremd) and
Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) that went off the woodwork.
In the 70th minute, Westminster added the go-ahead, but
James Kiraly (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) ansered just a few minutes later with an equalizer. Tyler Mansfield worked the ball up to
Tyler Chrisman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township), who had a a perfect cross for Kiraly's redirect in.
After Kiraly's equalizer, the Warhawks kept pushing for a winner with a shot from Chrisman, six corner kicks and three more shots over the final 14 minutes. Saul put the last shot on goal in the 89th minute, but the Blue Jay keeper made the save at the top of the netting.
With the draw, the Warhawks begin their season 1-0-1 after their first week of play.
The men's soccer team continues on their Missouri road trip, heading to St. Louis for a match against Webster. The Warhawks kick-off against the Gorlocks on Tuesday, September 8th at 6 PM.
