MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — UW-Whitewater defeated Cornell College 9-0 on Saturday. The Warhawks recorded 53 shots, including 35 on goal, while allowing four shots including two on goal.
UW-Whitewater built a 3-0 halftime lead behind two goals from
Jenna Laidlaw (Aberdeen, Scotland/Aberdeen Grammar) and another from
Brooklynn Carlson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central). Before breaking through, the Warhawks generated seven shots and four corner kicks in the opening 11 minutes, with
Lilli Rick (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) hitting the right post at 9:10. Laidlaw scored from
Rowan Severson's (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) assist at 13:53, then added another goal at 15:37 after three
Leah Dehne (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) shots were saved.
Kara Smith (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) stopped Cornell College's shot on goal at 21:27, and Carlson scored off Laidlaw's assist at 22:13 before UW-Whitewater added more pressure late with eight shots from 33:10 to 41:50.
UWW added six second-half goals, including four in the first 13:02 after the break.
Karina Osborn (Arena, Wis./River Valley) put a shot on frame at 45:42 before
Brinley Dunsirn (Appleton, Wis./North) scored from
Jasmine Wilson (Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton) at 46:16, and Dehne and Osborn followed by assisting each other on goals at 49:12 and 53:10. Dunsirn scored again at 58:02, then Laidlaw converted a
Chloe Bolla (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) assist at 64:24 to tally the hat trick.
Ellyse Kelley (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) finished an
Amelia Burns (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton) setup at 65:43 to move the score to 9-0. The Warhawks kept creating chances after that, adding 10 shots and two corner kicks after Kelley's goal, while Smith saved Cornell College's only shot on goal of the half at 74:35.
In addition to the hat trick, Laidlaw posted an assist and finished with seven points, seven shots including six shots on goal. Dunsirn scored twice on three shots, putting two attempts on goal. Dehne tallied a goal and an assist and put all four of her shots on frame. Smith played all 90 minutes in goal, made two saves and recorded a shutout.
