Union, N.J. -- UW-Whitewater dropped their opening match of an invitational in New Jersey 3-1 to Penn St.-Harriburg Friday evening. The Warhawks took the opening set 25-22 before PSH secured the next three 25-22, 26-24, 25-23.
UWW closed the door late in the first set to take an early lead in the match. After PSH took the lead 22-21, the Warhawks rattled off the next four courtesy of two
Gaby DiMotto (New Berlin, Wis./West) kills, a PSH miscue and an
Amanda Hillmann (Cedarburg, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)-
Aubrie Krzus (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) block capped the set.Â
UW-Whitewater recovered from an early 7-2 deficit in set two with a huge run to take an 11-9 advantage. The set would go back-and-forth with Penn St.-Harrisburg evening the match with the 25-22 win.Â
The Warhawks made another big push in set three - this time late in the game. Trailing 24-20, UWW used a DiMotto kill and an
Abbie Dix (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead)-Krzus block to bolster a four-point run to tie it up 24-24. PSH was able to tally the next two to take the 2-1 lead in the match.Â
In set four, UW-Whitewater held a 21-18 lead but PSH closed the set on a 7-2 run.Â
Penny Schell (Cross Plains, Wis./St. Ambrose Academy) led UWW in her first collegiate outing. The freshman hit .471 with 9 kills in 17 attempts while committing just a single attack error. Krzus set up the UWW hitters with 33 assists adding six kills and four blocks in the contest. Libero
Natalie Lawton (Elmhurst, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) led the Warhawks defensively with 27 digs.Â
UW-Whitewater wraps up the trip out east Saturday with a match against Cortland at 11 CT followed a meeting with the host school Kean at 1 PM CT.Â
