ELMHURST, IL — The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team bounced back with a 4-1 win over Elmhurst University on Sunday. The Warhawks scored twice in each half and finished with a 15-9 advantage in shots, including 9-7 in shots on goal.
UW-Whitewater opened with pressure as
Aidian Martin (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) and
Caleb Bergman (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) put shots on frame in the sixth minute before the visitors earned a corner kick. The Blue Jays answered with a stretch of chances, but
Austin Waite (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) saved three shots before Elmhurst scored in the 28th minute to put the Warhawks behind 1-0.
Trailing by one, the Warhawks quickly came back to head into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Blake Lovick (Deforest, Wis./Deforest) equalized in the 42nd minute with a header goal off a corner kick from
Agostino Angelini (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada/Bishop Ryan Catholic). Angelini then scored the go-ahead goal off
Cade Mansfield's (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville) throw-in at 44:45. This marked Angelini's first goal of the season.
To start the second half, Waite made a save in the 52nd minute, and UW-Whitewater generated chances from Bergman,
Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) and
Luke Konrad (Buxtehude, Germany/Buxtehude Sued) before the two-goal burst.
The Warhawks broke open the second half with two quick back-to-back goals from
Lorin Baettig (Gettnau, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Willisau) at 71:35 and Martin at 72:23, extending their lead from 2-1 to 4-1. Baettig's goal was a rocket from 30-yards out that screamed into the top left corner of the net. Martin's goal came directly after the ensuing kick-off after the first goal. Martin drove through the defense before a quick shot found it's way past the keeper for Martin's first goal of the season.
After the Martin goal, the match became more physical, with UW-Whitewater whistled for three fouls and Bergman shown a yellow card during the final stretch. Waite made two more saves in net to close out the game. Waite recorded six saves in 90 minutes, making three in each half.
The Warhawk return to Fiskum Field on Wednesday, September 30th to take on Loras College in a doubleheader with the women's program. The women will take on the Duhawks at 4:30 PM followed by the men's game in the annual Warhawk/Duhawk Cup.
