Warhawk Men Blank Sabres in Home-Opener

WHITEWATER, Wis. — UW-Whitewater defeated Marian (WI) 6-0 on Saturday at Robert W. Fiskum Field. UWW outshot the Sabres 24-3, put 12 shots on goal and held the Sabres without a shot on goal.

UWW built a 3-0 halftime lead behind goals from Tyler Chrisman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township), Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) and Michael Voulgaris (Van Dyne, Wis./Oshkosh West) in a nine-minute first-half stretch. Chrisman opened the scoring at 10:06 off an Adam Kaup (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) assist, and after UWW earned three corner kicks between 14:02 and 18:47, Saul scored at 16:25 from Kian Delaney (Oak Forest, Ill./Victor J Andrew) before Voulgaris made it 3-0 at 19:06 off an Aidian Martin (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) assist. UWW continued to create chances after the third goal, with Luke Konrad (Buxtehude, Germany/Buxtehude Sued) recording six shots in the half, including one saved by Tyler Hall, and the team adding three more corner kicks from 22:31 to 29:52. The Sabres generated two early corners and a late shot by Fernando Mota, but UWW carried the 3-0 advantage into halftime.

UWW added three goals in the second half, beginning with Brodie Hemmersbach's (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) finish from Nil Calvo Alsina (Barcelona, Spain/Parkview) at 45:33 that made it 4-0. Calvo Alsina scored at 55:36 from Tino Angelini (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada/Bishop Ryan Catholic) for 5-0, and Caleb Bergman (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) followed at 61:43 off assists from Braylon Hemmersbach (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) and James Kiraly (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) for the 6-0 score. Around Bergman's goal, UWW generated three shots and three corner kicks from 58:59 to 62:30. UWW continued to create chances late with six shots and two corners from 75:43 to 82:53, including two Lorin Baettig (Gettnau, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Willisau) attempts saved by Niko Bohacek and three Delaney shots. The Sabres put a late shot off the top woodwork at 84:43, but UWW finished off the second half with the 6-0 win.

Chrisman scored the game-winning goal on his lone shot. Calvo Alsina finished with a goal and an assist for a team-high three points. Konrad led UWW with six shots. Baettig put three of his five shots on goal.

The Warhawks are back at it tomorrow afternoon with a 4 PM matchup against Macalester at Fiskum Field.
