Turner's Walk-Off Moves Warhawks past Blugolds in WIAC Tournament

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team kept their WIAC Tournament run alive with a walk-off win against UW-Eau Claire in the elimination games.

Hudson Turner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) had the walk-off single to bring in Keli Grennier (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 9th.

The Warkaws jumped out to a quick lead, taking a 6-0 lead after just two innings. Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) led off the game, reaching first with an error. Two wild pitches helped Holland move on to third before a balk brought in the Warhawks' first runner.

UWW put the crooked number up on the board with a 5-run second inning. Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) started the scoring with a groundout RBI, three singles in a row with RBIs from Turner &  Holland. Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) capped off the inning with a 2-RBI single to put the Warhawks up 6-0.

UW-Eau Claire answered back in the next frame with a two-run homer to score their first runs. After retiring the Warhawks in order in the bottom of the third, the Blugolds took the lead with their own five-spot in the top of the fourth.

Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) was able to bring in the tying run with a sacrifice fly in the next frame. Both teams put zeros on the board in the next two innings, leaving the score tied until the top of the 7th. The Blugolds retook the lead with an RBI double to put them back up 8-7.

The Warhawks retook the lead after a sacrifice bunt from Keli Grennier (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) caused an error to score Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point).

Cole Schwochow (Clyde, Ohio/Clyde) pitched six straight outs in the eighth & ninth innings, keeping the Blugolds from scoring another run.

With a tie game, the Warhawks rallied together in the bottom of the ninth. Grennier led off the inning with a single, and another single from Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) helped Grennier reach third, putting him just 90 feet away from the game-winning run.

With the infield in, expecting a bunt, Hudson Turner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) delivered the single right past the short stop to bring in Grennier to score, putting the Warhawks through to the bounce back game.

UW-Whitewater will face the loser of the UW-River Falls & UW-La Crosse game later today. Check back to uwwsports.com for more information.
