UWW Baseball Reaches WIAC Championship for Fourth Straight Year

Warhawks defeat UWRF 7-1 with lights-out pitching from Gradin Taschner

Box Score The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team got their revenge against UW-River Falls in the bounce-back game of the WIAC Tournament. With the 7-1 win, the Warhawks advance to the WIAC Championship game for the fourth consecutive season.

UW-River Falls jumped out to an early lead after an RBI double put the Falcons on the board. The Falcons had a lead-off triple in the third, but Gradin Taschner (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) notched two strikeouts to strand the runner and keep UWW within one

The Warhawks answered back in a big way, tying the game with a solo homer from Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North). Evan Olson (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) decided to put the next pitch in the same spot past the wall for the second solo shot. Leyten Bowers (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) watched in one pitch before performing the same feat, hitting the Warhawks' third solo home run in just four pitches.

Taschner kept putting zeros on the board with efficient innings. It allowed the Warhawks to build up their lead with another three-run inning in the bottom of the 6th.

Hudson Turner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) had a 2-RBI single with two outs to keep the Warhawks' inning alive. Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) followed with another single to help Turner make his way around home, putting the UW-Whitewater up 6-1.

The Falcons threatened to do some damage in the 8th, but Benjy Tucker (Alpharetta, Ga./Mount Pisgah) came in to close the door with the final two outs of the frame.

Jackson Spring (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) tacked on another with a lead-off homer in the bottom of the 8th to add some insurance to the Warhawks.

Tucker picked up the final three outs, notching a backwards K for the final out to send UWW to the championship.

The Warhawks will face UW-La Crosse in the WIAC Championship game, beginning at 11 am. If the Warhawks win the first game, the "if necessary" game will begin 30 minutes following the first game.
