WAVERLY, IA — The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer fell to Wartburg College in a 1-0 Friday night match. The Warhawks generated eight of their 11 shots after halftime and put five shots on goal, while the Knights finished with a 16-11 shot edge.
UW-Whitewater trailed 1-0 at halftime after the Knights' goal in the 15th minute 15:02, but the Warhawks generated the half's final sustained push. To begin the half,
Tyler Chrisman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) forced Caleb Cross into a save at 4:27, and
Austin Waite (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) answered the Knights' early pressure with a save on Alima Mmunga during a stretch that included multiple Knights corners.
The Warhawks stayed within one through a foul-heavy middle portion, then pressed late as
Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) had a shot saved at 39:02. The visitors earned four corner kicks between in the final minutes of the first half, but
Blake Lovick (Deforest, Wis./Deforest) generated a shot during the closing second, but the half ended with the Knights ahead 1-0.
After the break,
Kian Delaney (Oak Forest, Ill./Victor J Andrew) took the Warhawks' first shot of the half at 46:35, but the Knights followed with a stretch that forced Waite into a save at 52:48 and included a corner kick moments later. After a physical stretch that included multiple yellow cards,
Nil Calvo Alsina (Barcelona, Spain/Parkview) put a shot on frame at 61:25 before Waite made three more saves between 63:54 and 69:07.
The Warhawks returned to the attack with a Delaney shot at 74:21 and an
Agostino Angelini (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada/Bishop Ryan Catholic) effort saved at 78:05 before the late pressure. The Warhawks took four shots and two corner kicks from 82:02 to 89:22, including a Caleb Cross save on Lovick in the 88th minute. but the second half ended scoreless and the Knights closed out a 1-0 result.
The Warhawks return to Fiskum Field on Sunday, October 4th to take on UW-Stout Polytechnic in the WIAC opener. Kick-off is set for 4 PM in Whitewater.
