WHITEWATER, WI — The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team defeated UW-Stout Polytechnic 3-1 on Sunday to open up WIAC play with a win.
To start the game, UWW pushed forward quickly with shots from
Aidian Martin (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) and
Agostino Angelini (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada/Bishop Ryan Catholic) in the opening 76 seconds, then added another attempt from
Tyler Chrisman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) before the opening goal.
Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) put the Warhawks ahead in the 14th minute, Black Lovick lobbed a pass ahead to
Luke Konrad (Buxtehude, Germany/Buxtehude Sued), whose well-placed through-ball found Saul with a 1-on-1 with the Keeper. Saul chipped it past the keeper off his line from 18-yards out.
Almost immediately after, Saul nearly added to the advantage, putting a shot off the woodwork.
Austin Waite (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) kept the Blue Devils off the board with a save on Trey White in the 19th minute, and UWW later put together a sustained attacking stretch that included two corners and five shots between 36:18 and 42:48. The Warhawks carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
After the break, the Warhawks extended their lead, then defend a late Blue Devil comeback. UWW built pressure with shots from
Andriy Collins (Dublin, Ireland/Institute of Education),
Brodie Hemmersbach (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) and
Agostino Angelini (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada/Bishop Ryan Catholic), plus corner kicks in the 56th, 58th, 72nd and 75th minutes.
In the 54th minute,
Kian Delaney (Oak Forest, Ill./Victor J Andrew) had a perfectly placed cross that found the head of Konrad for what would've been teh second goal, but with the offside flag raised, the Warhawks had to reset with just a one goal lead.
Delaney was able to change that himself, though with his first goal of the season. In the 76th minute,
Liam Treacy (Frankfurt, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) played it out to Delaney who went top far post from outside the box to extend the lead to 2-0.
After Stout Poly pulled within 2-1 at 79:02, UWW restored the two-goal margin with an
Owen Winegar (Arlington Heights, Ill./Fremd) goal.
Blake Lovick (Deforest, Wis./Deforest) recorded his second assist of the nigth after a free kick ahead to
Tyler Chrisman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township). Chrisman's cross over found Winegar for the one timr to put the Warhawks up 3-1.
The game ended with a physical closing stretch that included cards to both teams. Stout had a few chances for another goal, but Waite made a save in the 90th minute for UWW to finish off the 3-1 win.
The Warhawks return to action on Wednesday, October 7th against Beloit College. Due to the re-surfacing of Foster Track, the game will be held at Badger High School in Lake Geneva. The men's game is set to begin at 4 PM with the women's game against UW-Platteville to follow.
