Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Warhawks Overcome Two-Goal Deficit, but Pioneers Strike Late to Close the Door

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team erased a two-goal deficit, but a score from Carroll University in the final minutes closed the door on the Warhawks' comeback in the Monday nightcap.

Carroll University jumped out to an early lead, scoring off a penalty kick and a counter-attack goal to go up 2-0 only 15 minutes into the game.

Down by two, the Warhawks turned on the pressure towards the end of the half. Makenzie Toms (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) was able to give the Warhawks a more manageable game, scoring in the 37th minute. Toms snuck one past the Pioneer keeper with the help of a free kick from Karina Osborn (Arena, Wis./River Valley).

The Warhawks nearly tied the game heading into the break, but a shot from Amelia Burns (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton) sailed a few inches high. Despite the miss the Warhawks' pressure set-up a competitive second half.

With the momentum of the goal and some close looks, the Warhawks dominated the early goings of the second half. Multiple corner kicks and shots on-goal kept the Pioneers on their heels to protect the one-goal lead.

With just 4 minutes to go on the clock, Emily Taylor (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs) pushed the ball ahead on a counter-attack. Summer Curtis (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) caught the defense out of position, forcing the Carroll keeper to rush the ball. Curtis was able to easily navigate around her, putting the equalizer into the empty net.

However, the Pioneers responded swiftly, regaining the lead in the 88th minute with a goal during an advantage play. The Warhawks were unable to respond, as Carroll protected the lead for the last 90 seconds.

The Warhawks return home for their next contest, facing Carthage College on Wednesday, September 10th. Kick-off is set for 7 PM at Fiskum Field.
