Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Severson Collects Game-Winner in 82nd Minute

Warhawks Defeat Firebirds 1-0 on Wednesday Night

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory over Carthage under the lights on September 10th, Wednesday night. Rowan Severson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) grabbed the game winning goal, scoring in the 82nd minute from nearly 20 yards out.

The first half was dead-even, with each team controlling the ball for 50% of the first 45-minutes. The Warhawks made the most of their time of possession, outshooting the Firebirds 3-1. UWW's first shot of the game nearly resulted in an goal to set the tone, but a team save by a Firebird defender didn't allow the early opportunity.

The Warhawks had a few more shots on goal, but nothing made it past the Carthage keeper. Jude Dobrinska (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan College Prep) made the stop on the lone Firebird attempt to keep the game at a stalemate.

The Firebirds returned after the break with an early opportunity at net. Carthage took a shot off a close free kick. Hannah Wolf (Oshkosh, Wis./West) made the initial save, but wasn't able to gather the ball, allowing a point-blank shot from Carthage. Wolf made the athletic play to stop the second attempt, diving on the ball through traffic to not allow another attempt.

UW-Whitewater extended their pressure, with two corner kicks and two shots on goal in the middle of the second half. The Firebirds defense finally broke, as Rowan Severson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) found a path through the middle of the defense. The lefty took the shot from the top of the box, hitting her mark over the Carthage keeper.

The Warhawks took the lead with just 8-minutes to go but they still kept looking for the bracer. UWW recorded a few more shots on goal in the final few minutes, not allowing a chance for Carthage at the late equalizer.

The Warhawks will take a three game road stretch, starting with a match against Coe on Spetember 13th. They will return home on September 20th to take on Cornell. The match against Cornell will also be the Warhawks senior day.
